Its really no secret that I love Pokemon, and I love maps. I even devoted a whole post to the best cross stitch maps. And honestly, about half of them were Pokemon. However, I wrote that blog after my own Pokemon map cross stitch, and whilst that map was created by me using 15 different reference images, these in game maps of regions stitched up by strangenessisconserved weren’t some of them.

Weirdly, the maps in game don’t match up to what we know about the Pokemon world, especially the Kanto and Johto regions (top left and right on the image above). So I decided to combine the images to create an in-style in game Pokemon map of Kanto and Johto.

You can see below how my two Pokemon maps compare:

Interested in seeing another cross stitch map? I stitched a retro video game invasion plan cross stitch on pre-printed world aida. It might be worth a look.

I recently saw some awesome retro adverts for the SNES in a Japanese magazine and just fell in love with how they were sold. This idea floated around my head for some time, and I had a play with the idea when I made my 3D arcade cabinet cross stitch and it gave me the enthusiasum to create another 3D project, a super small console. The Nintendo64 jumped into my head, and I started planning based on a pixelated controller I had created some years ago. As it developed I also decided to include 2 controllers, and 2 games; Pokemon Stadium and the golden Legend of Zelda cartridges (using metallic threads, following the success of my gold Zelda cartridge cross stitch).

Once created I wanted to create a design close to the original advert that inspired me:

I like maps. In fact, in the past I’ve created a few map pieces, including the cross stitch map by SuckUK, and I’ve been intending to create a cross stitch map from the ground up for sometime, however I never settled on which game. I tried a fallout vault, a hitman map, even looking into final fantasy for a while, however I realised that there was one game I always went back to, that shared a map between all its games; Pokemon.

This is the national map, meaning it doesn’t contain Unova, Kalos, or any of the ranger games. However even then, there is a large amount of made up parts. The Pokemon games have never reveiled how the world looks. I used hints and comments from the games to create a unified design which looked good to me.

The Very Best Pop Culture Cross Stitch

Sampler Harry Potter Cross Stitch large

We’ve shown the best geeky cross stitch before on our site, but with the lines blurring on popular culture and geek, we feel its time to post some killer cross stitches!

Pokemon

Pokemon go was massive last year, and continues to be a stable app on many of our phones thanks to gen 2, but nothing compares to how awesome the original epic cross stitch is. This version by Eponases shows just how much effort is required with 8 months of stitching.

Video Games

There are frankly loads of video game cross stitches out there now, a large volume of which are mine… but the reason cross stitch got such a cult following back in 2010 was partly due to awesome work being shared on the likes of technabob. This amazing example by psi169 is one of my all time favorites.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter will ALWAYS (see what I did there?) be a part of our hearts, but there is so much going on in the books and movies, how can you stitch all of them? Well this brilliant Potter inspired sampler by Etsy shop FeltLikeStitching is made particularly poignant by adding a little golden flair.

Tattoos

1 in 3 people have a tattoo. Hard to get away from now-a-days, but its rare to see a truly brilliant one. However, this rose cross stitch tattoo, whilst not my personal favorite, still goes to show there’s talent out there.

Star Wars

When you think of a Star Wars cross stitch there is only one that comes to mind. The “Coruscant Tapestry” has become so popular it was even posted in major English newspapers.

If you wanted to check out some other Star Wars cross stitch I have a book out too.

Star Trek

Whilst I did have a hand in the below pattern, thanks to my Star Trek Cross Stitch Book, the fact that the below sampler is so fantastic is the designer has merged multiple patterns into one, making a super stitch.

Sherlock Holmes

This awesome little sherlock cross stitch is only made all the cooler by it being so small. aliciawatkins occasionally sells them on her Etsy, so keep your eye out for a chance to get one.

Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones hit the world my storm, and its clear we’ll get spin offs, but whilst the story is all about being the king or queen, everyone knows its all about owning the map. And now you can thanks to RandomlyGenerated’s Etsy store, featuring this brilliant map you can develop as the stories continue on.

This project was slow to come about. About a year previous I had won a cross stitch-able leather bracelet as part of a competition I won for my minature arcade cabinet cross stitch, but it had hung around in my stitching kit boxes, I simply didn’t know what to do with it.

I brought it back out again after stitching a leather notebook cover with a pikachu cross stitch and tried to come up with an idea of what I could use it for. I just so happened to have finished playing through Pokemon Sun. In the game the character is given a mega ring, roughly the size of the bracelet, and I thought it was a perfect fit!

MotoRuxin, a Twitch streamer who cross stitches, has been doing some sweet stitches recently on really bright background aida, and it got my fingers itching for something similar. I haven’t really done much with exciting colored aida, other than my red aida background gengar Japanese print cross stitch. At first I tried finding a bright purple, my favorite color, however I settled for orange.

I had a quick google online, and after seeing Adam Savage’s My Neighbour Toronto costume, I got on a bit of an anime binge. And lo and behold, a Spirited Away stitch. The design is by Richard J Evans, who does pixel art of loads of anime films.

Back to the Pokemon Cross Stitch! I found this image on pinterest, and despite my best efforts I just can’t find the original, so shout out to the original artist whoever you may be!

I’ve been meaning to get back into stitching tattoo inspired cross stitches, such as the portal tattoo and Pokemon tattoo stitches people rave about. Not only are they a great project to stitch as they take so much time, but the pattern design phase is fantastic. In this tattoo I redesigned most of it to suit my own needs, and to make it more obviously Pokemon.
I believe in mew
It also has some sweet Kreinik threads around Mew to make him look even more special. Its based off the old myth of Pokemon Blue and Red that there was a hidden Mew under the truck by SS Anne. Actually, mew has been hidden in my cross stitch before; most people don’t realise mew is on the walls on my 3D Pokemon cave cross stitch.

DMC recently came out with a 24 carat gold thread to celebrate their 270th Birthday. Whilst the price for a full skein of thread made from actual gold was super high, I was able to get my hands on a very limited quantity. It wasn’t large at all, but I looked around at what other people had done with it: nothing. In fact, due to its cost they kept it whole and didn’t use it. So I decided that I would stitch with mine and be the only person to do so.

I had a think what would be important enough to warrant gold thread being used, and after throwing a few ideas around I knew that the thing I had to stitch, HAD to be the most well known gold object in video game history; the Zelda golden cartridge. There are also some non-24 carat metallic threads in there from both Kreinik and DMC, but part of this cartridge is pure gold.

This project inspired me to use gold thread again with my micro Nintendo64 cross stitch cartridges.

6 Epic Glow-In-The-Dark Geeky Cross Stitches

spiderman glow in the dark cross stitch

Last month we featured a post about glow-in-the-dark cross stitch’s staying power, and we concluded that whilst its got history, and a big backing, not many people are picking it up outside of Halloween. So today I have 6 of the most epic geeky glow-in-the-dark cross stitches to bring you some inspiration!

First up we have a massive secret passion of mine; Journey. Not only has the stitcher, Kay, made the scarf glow in the dark (as it does in the game), but the background has some of Journey’s iconic runes.

And then we have the master of the night himself, Batman with a clever hidden nighttime message.

Whilst doing this post I reached out to many of my cross stitching friends to see what they thought were some of the best pieces, and I was shocked to hear that one of my own pieces, an Assassins Creed glow in the dark cross stitch was one they picked.

Boo! This clever Pacman inspired piece completely hides the ghost until the lights go out. Not only is this hidden message super cute, but it uses many of the design principles for cross stitch patterns we mentioned last week.

Nothing excites me more than a clever use of geeky pop culture references, and so a light spell from Harry Potter immortalized in glow in the dark cross stitch? A clear winner, that we even featured as part of our Harry Potter cross stitch roundup.

Finally we have some works by StitchFight, who I’ve not only exhibited with, but been inspired to make a space invader cross stitch too.
A keen glow in the dark cross stitcher, he’s probably best known for his Kick-Ass cross stitch, however I just love his superhero series.

I was watching a youtube video and the vlogger brought themselves a pack of three pokemon in teacups. These Japanese edition toys are SUPER hard to get in the UK (belive me, I tried), and so I wanted to stitch it instead. Unlike most of my stuff instead of creating image from scratch I placed together existing sprites, like my surfing pikachu and Pokemon battle cross stitch. I reshaped the tea cup and the shading was terrible, but with a little change of sizes to fit a little better and it now looks super cute!
