6 Epic Glow-In-The-Dark Geeky Cross Stitches

Last month we featured a post about glow-in-the-dark cross stitch’s staying power, and we concluded that whilst its got history, and a big backing, not many people are picking it up outside of Halloween. So today I have 6 of the most epic geeky glow-in-the-dark cross stitches to bring you some inspiration!

First up we have a massive secret passion of mine; Journey. Not only has the stitcher here made the scarf glow in the dark (as it does in the game), but the background has some of Journey’s iconic runes.

And then we have the master of the night himself, Batman with a clever hidden nighttime message.

Whilst doing this post I reached out to many of my cross stitching friends to see what they thought were some of the best pieces, and I was shocked to hear that one of my own pieces, an Assassins Creed glow in the dark cross stitch was one they picked.

Boo! This clever Pacman inspired piece completely hides the ghost until the lights go out. Not only is this hidden message super cute, but it uses many of the design principles for cross stitch patterns we mentioned last week.

Nothing excites me more than a clever use of geeky pop culture references, and so a light spell from Harry Potter immortalized in glow in the dark cross stitch? A clear winner, that we even featured as part of our Harry Potter cross stitch roundup.

Finally we have some works by StitchFight, who I’ve not only exhibited with, but been inspired to make a space invader cross stitch too.
A keen glow in the dark cross stitcher, he’s probably best known for his Kick-Ass cross stitch, however I just love his superhero series.

Is Glow-In-The-Dark really here to stay?

DMC have come out with a lot of new and interesting threads over the years (and still do), however one that EVERYONE knows, is the glow in the dark range. Other brands quickly followed suit, and now there are loads of different brands, shades, and constructs to choose from. However my main question, is are they really here to stay?

This post is scheduled for Halloween, and glow in the dark threads are used in almost every Halloween project for obvious reasons, however outside of October, do you really see them? My answer is pretty much no.

I’m not against glow in the dark, I’ve used it in a series of projects, like the one above which uses Sew It All’s glow in the dark aida, however a quick google search shows there simply aren’t many projects out there using the stuff.

The thread is a little complicated to use, some are worse than others, however it only compares to a metallic thread. But metallic threads are used all the time in loads of projects.
Instead, glow in the dark has been relegated to a gimmick thread, instead of being part of your go to threads.

I will agree that glow in the dark in all forms is used rarely, however with recent pushes into variegated thread, including DMC’s new Coloris range it seems to me that glow in the dark might not be here to stay…

Design: Lord Libidan
Count: 14
Canvas: White
Colours: 4
Video Game: Assassin’s Creed

This was the main part of my swap gift for Sprite Stitch’s Swap 2011. My partner was riotpatch, and one of her favourite games was assassin’s creed. I love the series too, but have never got around to stitching anything for it, so thought it would be a brilliant idea to do something related to them. I got playing with some ideas, and decided I would try and hide a secret message in the poster (like the games do), so its the assassin’s logo, and in morse code is written “riotpatch”.

They are pins of Altair and Ezio from the assassin’s creed games, they’re about an inch high.
