Title: Pokemon Cave
Date Completed: June 2013
Design: Lord Libidan
Canvas: Plastic
Colours: 11
Video Game: Pokemon

This has been in the planning for more than a year before I started, and took almost 6 months to complete.
The reason it took so long is simply the challenge of having such a piece come out at you on plastic caves, on a 45 degree angle (plastic canvas means you can only use 90 or 0/180 degrees). However, after giving up on the project a total of three times, I finally worked out a way to do it.
Its based upon a series of works by the painter John Wilson after I saw a few of his pieces in a local art store. The effect should be that the cave looks to go inwards, and when you move your head (or the camera), the cave goes with it, forcing perspective, whilst all the time, it comes out at you.

After doing my optimus prime transformer cross stitch and jetfire transformer cross stitch, people started to notice me. I was in a few magazines and people were visiting my site. This came with a few requests for other patterns, and the majority of them were for a new transformer; Soundwave.

I created a rough pattern, but came across an issue; the tapes. Soundwave has a series of transformers that fit into the cassette deck on his chest, however due to the scale I’d used in the previous transformers the size of the tapes was tiny! Thankfully I was able to work them out and created two awesome transforming cross stitch tapes; ratbat and laserbeak.

Once I worked that out, I felt a little more relaxed so tried to make it have a few special accessories; two batteries that fit into his back that convert to a cannon on his shoulder and a gun on his arm.

I am also planning on making a starscream, and might try my hand at megaton, although he is going to be EXTREMELY hard to do…

With a transforming Optimus Prime cross stitch under my belt, and a Jetfire cross stitch too, my next big challenge was Soundwave. Unlike the other two however Soundwave created his own list of problems; but there was one big one. The tapes.

To anyone unaware, Soundwave has a series of smaller transformers that fit into the cassette deck on his body. Making tapes shouldn’t be too hard, however in order to keep Soundwave in scale to the others, it gave me very small tapes indeed. Before I could attempt the robot, I had to tackle the tapes first. So I picked Ratbat and Laserbeak.
I also intend to make the rest of his tapes; Buzzsaw, Rumble & Frenzy.

It turned out these worked perfectly! I was then able to create the 3D transforming cross stitch Soundwave, and these tapes fit perfectly.

After doing my previous optimus prime cross stitch transformer, I wanted to continue the series. Many people related the Optimus Prime to a paper robot made by PaperRobots1999 (Sadly no longer active), however they also had a few other photos of future projects which never happened due to the site closing. This was one of them, meaning I had to work out the pattern based off of a picture; for the first time ever.
Like optimus, its based on the original toy, so is a Macross VF-1S Valkyrie in generation 1 anime colors.

I have also made plans for a Soundwave cross stitch transformer which you can get on my etsy store.

If you look out for Cross Stitch Crazy Magazine, I will be published in their March issue!

Plastic canvas has always drawn me, it allows for the structured cross stitch to become its own structure. However, when I picked up a few sheets all of the patterns looked so boring. A boring simple house? Neh. I wanted to make something better. So I pondered for a while before realising that plastic canvas can be used in a similar way to building blocks, and with it you can make any shape. I knew that I wanted to push boundaries a little of what was possible, and I had only just started cross stitch, so wasn’t afraid to fail.

I always loved fiddling with my brothers generation 1 transformer toys and it started from there. Its based on the original toy series, so transforms into a Peterbilt style semi-tractor. Initially I thought about making the robot itself, and realised I could make joints move by using wire paper clips. One thing led to another and before you know it, I was planning on hundreds of scrap peices of paper how to make it transform.

It got a LOT of attention, and so I started designing a second transformer; Jetfire, a robot that transforms into a jet plane. It didn’t stop there though! I even have a Soundwave tape deck trasformer, with tapes that fit inside that transform into ratbat and laserbeak!
