Quite quickly after I found the pattern I based my Fallout Overencumbered cross stitch on, Etsy started showing me ALL the Fallout patterns. And there was one I liked, but also didn’t like. The “please stand by” stand by screen from PixelCatPatterns. So I purchased this one, made some changes to make the pattern perfect, and stitched it up!

For those who aren’t aware, I should probably talk about what this is. The Fallout universe uses a 1940s to 1950s style and their technology still remains in that time. So all TVs are tube-style TVs from that period. And with that, they’ve regularly used the “Indian Head Test Pattern” which was displayed on US TVs around that time. Sometimes they used the original, and other times they’ve changed it to be unique, with over 30 different designs used in the games and in marketing since.

But there were a few things I really didn’t like. The first was simple enough; I wanted it to fit into a standard photo frame, hopefully making it look a bit like a TV.
Second, I removed the white, which just looked out of place, and the bars on the top.
These bars are on the bottom in the various versions, but never on the top. So I chose to replace this with a Vault Tec logo, which should make it look a bit more Fallout (and was a good replacement for the Indian Head on the original)!
I then stitched it up on a Celadon green 18-count aida, to make it look a little like the green-hued screens from the game.
Hopefully, I really captured its feel!
The test pattern has a really interesting history, so for those interested, I would suggest the video below!
Happy stitching!
