With the DMC thread company being in operation for well over 270 years, it’s no wonder that they’ve had to discontinue a few threads. And whilst we’ve looked into the reasons DMC threads have been discontinued I couldn’t find a full list anywhere. So, please find the attached list, with replacements (if there is one):

    I need a replacement color for 273 metallic don’t see it on list?

      Hi! We only cover the 6 strand divisable threads here.
      DMC 273Z was a “Fil A Broder” thread, that became “Fil metallise” threads, and then gutted.
      As a result there is no good replacement for that thread. The best suggestion would be Diamant D140, but this is much golder, so check before use!

    Hi, Love your website! I can’t find any information on 3684. And I can’t find any mention of this floss anywhere else. Was there really a 3694?

      We’ve only just found out about DMC 3684! It was discontinued in the 50s. We’ll have a post about it soon with a series of images of it too!
      As for DMC 3694, I haven’t been able to find anything (but its possible they existed prior to 1950). There is a brand called Celofil, which do craft threads, that has a 3694 though.

    Hi, thanks for all the information it’s very helpful however I’m a little confused. When you click on the link above (reasons DMC colours are discontinued) I get another list & some of the “new” colours are different to those listed above e.g. 3880 is listed above as being replaced by 3772 whereas on the link it shows it as replaced by 223. Which list is correct?

    Here’s something interesting… even in my 2002 threaded color chart the 504-3773 line is in parentheses, with the “new” number in bold. It makes me wonder how long they’ve been trying to discontinue these colors!
