These two are an extremely long time coming! Back in 2016 when I was writing the officially licensed Star Wars cross stitch pattern book, I floated a bunch of ideas to the publisher and Disney. They selected some and binned others, and this went in a few rounds. One of the pattern designs that made it through until right at the end were the Star Wars Imperial logo cross stitch Star Wars Rebel logo cross stitch, which were going to go on a set of caps.

I’ve personally always thought that the caps worn by the rebels, and to some extent the imperials looked very much like a Castro Cap. These military caps were the design basis for the caps in the films, so it felt perfect to have the caps used in the official book. And for a long time; Disney did too!

However, right at the end, it was decided that we should place the logos on caps using Photoshop rather than stitch directly on the caps. And then the size of the patterns increased as well. But I’d already brought the caps!
So they have lived in my drawers for the last 9 years, with tags on, waiting to be stitched on.

Well, that time finally came!
A reader reached out with an awesome project they were working on, and I decided I would try something similar. And that meant stitching onto a jacket.
Now, I’ve stitched on all kinds of things before, including pikachu onto a journal, but there are a few ways to stitch onto fabric. The first is punch holes in the fabric, but as it was a denim jacket, these holes would be lost. So this left me with either using vinyl aida or using waste canvas. So I thought I would try both, and see which I preferred! This left me with two projects to be stitched onto fabric, and what would you know; I had two caps!

So I designed two quick stitches I could put on these two caps, and I felt it was only fitting to have them Star Wars based!
The first was the karki green, to which I added the rebel logo, just as we had originally imagined the hat to look. But the second I decided to base off the rank insignias the Imperials have. I chose the Grand Moff himself, played by Peter Cushing originally, with his iconic two bars with a mix of blue, yellow and red. I placed this one on a black hat, which is technically not correct (it should be on a dark grey), but I loved the style of the black tie fighter pilots, so I ignored continuity for a while!

This is a project I slipped in whilst stitching something else too, meaning that for the first time in a long time, I had multiple cross stitch projects on the go at once!
But I was glad I gave both styles a try and will use both in my upcoming jacket project.

Happy stitching!
